Saw Oli Brown last night. Good but not as good as I thought. Maybe he has gone a bit off the boil?

There was a very talented support solo guitarist /singer. Very clever but let down by being a bit one dimensional with no real substance. His technique was to use a heavily amplified acoustic guitar which only needed a gentle touch to sound a note. He made full use of this by playing a backing lick with left hand way down the neckwhilst playing over the top of that with his right hand at bottom end of neck. Other have done this before (including Hendrix), but this bloke was really going for it. His other trick was to hammer his hand on diffrent parts of the top or sides of the body of the guitar. This was very effective and clever. But as I said it is a kind of one trick pony and most of his songs had no real substance. If he can sort that out, then he will become top notch. Generally reminded me of Nick Drake in both his breathy way f singing and the phrasing he used.

(Of course it could be that it was me that had an off night  )

Oh yeah, Tommy said the two disc Government Cheese compilation is going to be released October 26. That one should rock.

It's just been mentioned on his Facebook thing that it is now available - an order has gone in from me for the double cd & a t-shirt

Friday - Stone Sole River. Heavy prog-ish. Listening to these for a few years now and quite like them. Mostly their own stuff, which can take a bit of getting used to (ask Hooplah) and a few covers to keep the casuals happy.

Saturday - Verden et al. Will give this a proper write-up when I get round tuit.

Tuesday - went for a curry and bobbed into the Baker's. Steve Oaks Quartet. Jazz band. Don't ask me what sort of jazz - I'm not that clued up. But they were good. Was going to have half-an-hour but ended up staying until the last bus.

Balls - I've got work in the morning.

Verden Allen, Hereford RNC, 30/10/10

First on were local band, the Dandelion Killers (in fact all four bands were reasonably local to Hereford). Quirky three piece; sometimes a bit 60s orientated, Small Faces-ish at times. 30 minute set alternating some nice melodies with explosive rock-out moments.

Next were Frantik, who were more of straightforward rocking band. Another 30 minute set.

Third up the Misers doing about 45 minutes. Bit Stones-ish/Hunter-ish/sometimes Dylan-ish. Definitely worth listening to more of these, and I'll most likely be buying a CD or three. Would also travel to see them again.

Headlining was Verden (who he?) and Soft Ground. Verden the axeman strutted onto the stage, playing guitar for Long Time No See, before settling behind his organ (ooh err missus). Played guitar on a couple of other numbers as well. Can't remember the full set list, but definitely making the cut were Carry On, Rock’n’Roll Queen, Death May be Your Santa Claus, Soft Ground, Hold On To This and A New Way.

For some reason the gig only lasted about 55-60 minutes, and was cut off for a curfew about 12.45 (following in Ian's footsteps?). But it was brilliant while it lasted, and I hope the old dude gets out more often.

Pics to follow if I can work out what's what.

Aagh, forgot to mention. Martin Chambers was there, and sat in on the drums for the last few numbers.

Tried to post them but getting "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image".

I'll have another look tomorrow.

Nice one Mick, did you stay relatively sober then??

I get same message about pics when I try to post them here. Think they need to be resized in Photoshop or similar to be under max pixel size allowed in message.

Is this an English amalgam of the two words 'leaving' and 'peacefully'?? Usually used in close proximity with the words 'the premises'!! :D :D

If so it would save a lot of moronic bouncers a lot of brain stress and energy. All they would have to say is "Can you please leace" :D :D

Finger ends fatter than keys and shortage of lamp oil due to distance geps being worn as readers only work with lenses.

James Maddock-Outopost In The Burbs- Montclair NJ

I was supposed to have a jam at my house last night, but the guitarist cancelled, so I needed something else to do. I decided to take my daughter to see James Maddock. We went and bought tickets at the door. The venue is a church and you sit in the pews. We got there early enough to get front pew.
The opening act was introduced as Megan Reilly from Nashville. She walked onstage accompanied by her guitarist. You can imagine our surprise when I realized her guitarist was none other then James Mastro!
They played a short set and it was brilliant. I would recommend her.
Next up was James Maddock accompanied by a piano player and Dave Immergluck from The Counting Crows on guitar and mandolin. These guys are great. I've seen James several times before and he is always outstanding. He calls his music "folk rock" and that is pretty accurate. James has a great voice and writes amazing songs. Go see him if you can.
The venue holds about 200 and looked pretty close to a sell out. The sound was excellent. It's a non profit organization that hosts a music series every year. If you're in the area, look it up and try and support it if you can.

Here's a video interview from last night. It also has some performance clips at the end, one of which features James Mastro with Megan Reilly.
