Lots of comments about Geraint Watkins. Another similar piano player (boogie specialist) is Ben Waters.

Nick Lowe, b/u by Wilco from recent Austin City Limts show. Kinda whipsaws you going back and forth with rehearsal footage, but worth it.

Hell o all,

Del Fuegos at the Capitol Center in Concord NH. The last gig of their reunion tour and according to the band the last-ever gig.

Their new CD 'Silver Star' was sold at the shows and is available for download from Amazon or ITunes.

Michael Schenker.......Showcase Live

Well the daughter and I headed down the highway about 20 minutes to Showcase Live, the beautiful club quite close to my house for an evening of mellow music courtesy of Michael Schenker. I only have one of his albums(heavy hitters) and know 3 UFO songs he played on. My daughter had no idea who he is. I blasted my one cd during dinner and she said she'ld go. Well, as with most metal shows there could only have been about 6 women in the farly packed club! Lots of bobbing heads and air guitar playing. I have to admit I almost started air-guitaring myself at one point.Schenker was in good form and blew the windows off the club with a high volume of heavy riffing and blistering solos. Although we didn't know the songs,we ended up singing along with a few choruses(I think one was "too tough to handle"?) 2 hlours later we left with smiles on our faces and ears pleasantly buzzing. It was an awesome show. Later ,while waiting fior a urinal in the mens room I learned that Schenker is 58 years old! He certainly still has it though. The UFO songs he played were "let it roll", "doctor doctor", and "rock bottom" where he played an amazingly long and ripping solo.

I have an op to do this on Sunday Rick. I have wanted to see this man my whole life and every tour bails as the venue he is booked at near me is approaching. A friends band is opening so should be a good show. Nice to see someone saw him and a good review!

Belated thanks to everyone for their feedback on Nick Lowe. I had a pretty good idea on what to expect music wise which your comments confirmed.

There is a good chance I will now be seeing him as I have a lawyers appointment in Melbourne earlier that day as well. I just have to swap out of my shift that night. Geraint Watkins is being promoted as his special guest on the tour.

No -- in hindsight I probably should have pursued it, because they were really friendly and approachable. I just think MTH are one of the old-school bands they admire, like also Cheap Trick, Kiss and Thin Lizzy -- I hear all those bands in The Biters' work. I just like young bands that clearly respect the bands that went before. These are only kids, maybe 25-26 years old.

Tuk, the singer, did approach me and tell me he liked my MtH shirt, and I told him it was from the reunion gigs. I got Matt Gabs to sign a picture for me, and he signed it "MOTT!" so we have a kinship now.

They play with tremendous energy. I was disappointed it was only a 35-minute show, and then the same 35 minutes in Austin 24 hours later. I hope they make it. I hope they come back.

Ken Dodd & His Diddy Men at The Cross Keys in Skipton. Actually it was RTM in his band doing a good selection of covers, over two long & enjoyable sets, a few less obvious ones including Teenagers etc by My Chemical Romance. One of the better bands of this sort I've seen of late & our diminutive friend is actualy quite a good guitarist. Added to that I met another FZ fan who is a good friend of RTM & I'm very, very jealous of the fact that he saw Hawkwind in 1972, then again I was 9 at the time & a bit too young for such fun . A great night & thanks again to Mike & Linda for their hospitality.

Post Re: Recent Gigs
The Jack Bruce Big Blues Band at The Stables, Wavendon. ( where Ian played a couple of years ago)

Rick - you would have loved it.

Jack played a one hour set , then went away for an interval, then came back for another hour and ten minutes.

He has some great players with him and I would describe the style as the jazzy side of blues (as compared to the bluesy side of jazz). There was a bit too much of the jazz side in the first set, in which he played 2 Cream songs. The second set though was mostly Cream songs with Theme From An Imaginary Western thrown in and maybe something else.

Improvisations all night long, throughout most songs in the way Cream would have done, but with (as I said) a more jazzy style - backing band included drummer, keyboards/piano player, electric (one song acoustic) guitar, tenor sax, trumpet and trombone players. Also an electric bass player for when Jack played piano - they both played bass on Sunshine Of Your Love. When playing bass, Jack played a fretless electric. As I said all the band were good, but I will single out the guitarist and the drummer, who gave us a 6 minute solo - the like of which could not be bettered, but I have seen enough drum solos 40 years ago to last me till I die.

Jack seemed to enjoy himself - as he told the band after one improvisation - "thanks guys I enjoyed that" -nice touch to his band members.

Concert Live were recording the evening and it should be available in about a week.

G
