If All I Was Was Black - The great new album by the legendary Mavis Staples - on CD. Featuring the amazing production and songwriting skills of our fellow Hunter/MTH fan Jeff Tweedy of Wilco :-)

Yes I am - I have it on CD and that sounds as good as the vinyl (or even better). This is similar to the Montrose and MC5 albums that I will sell because I have decent sounding CDs of those also. However in their case, even though I have the CD versions, I will also keep the vinyl copies (neither are first issue) of their first albums because they are just so good and I do not want to part with them.

Although the May Blitz is a first issue (swirl) I don't have the sleeve, but still hope to get some good money back on it.

Oxford American Magazine Mix Disc -- Southern Music -- Kentucky Issue

Sturgill Simpson, Loretta , Dwight, Everlys, Bill Monroe, Freakwater, Bonnie Prince Billy, Harry Dean Stanton, Jean Ritchie, Legendary Shack Shakers, Les McCann and plenty of less obvious choices (love Matt Duncan).

No Government Cheese (bummer!) and I guess Ky. can't really claim NRBQ, even though Terry is from Louisville. Don't see anything by Richard Hell on here, either (born from within spittin' distance from where I write this....) although maybe he is included in the bonus download.

Can't wait to dive into the print issue....

nearly finished playing a CD box set that I just got in the Amazon Black Friday week, byThe Creation. This has 4 CDs and a DVD all set within an A5 sized hardbound book giving their story plus info on each track. It includes all of their recorded tracks including the singles when they were called The Mark Four - a competent beat group of the early sixties.

The real meat of the matter is their classic mid sixties era after becoming Creation and they laid down a handful of monster tracks. At the time they would have been called psychedelic pop, but now they are referred to as freakbeat ( a term that gives you a good idea of how they sound). For all of these main tracks, there is the original mono tracks followed by a 2015 version using the masters and producing really decent sounding stereo versions. Amongst these are a few more ordinary songs but all are enjoyable and of course the classics - Making Time, Painter Man, Biff Bang Pow, How Does It Feel To Feel, Nightmares.

Also included are their "reformed" band albums - the 80's album marred by typical 80's production including the dreaded drum machine (!) and a 90's album recorded for the Creation label (named by Alan McGee after the band). I have not yet played this one but I believe that (with all original band members) it is better than the 80's one (only the 2 main men from the band plus drum machine and more studio gizmos).

Finally there is the dvd which has a recent interview with guitarist Eddie Phillips (not including brief member Ron Wood, the only surviving original member other than their drummer), and film of 2 original line up gigs from the reformed band in the 90's. Unfortunately the sound recording of both is very poor - most modern youtube videos giving better sound, but that is what it is. Apparently there was a slightly later gig that was disastrous with all of the normal band members falling out etc (which actually was the story of the band throughout, but maybe had a part in their classic era sound with an under-swell of tension.)

Eddie Phillips is known for his technique of playing electric guitar with a violin bow a couple of years before Jimmy Page did the same. Some say that Eddie copied the bloke from The Action, but Eddie descibes how he came about this himself.

A decent set overall, slightly marred bythe points made above.

Quatro, Scott & Powell. Bought this after seeing a good review in (I think) Classic Rock, a mix of covers & original songs, a good fun album. Hopefully you all realise that Quatro is Suzi, Scott is Andy of Sweet & Powell is Don of Slade
