It doesn't surprise me at all. The United States gives taxpayer money to just about everyone :)

I think you mis-read that one. I think you'll find it was simply the case of a technician who fitted an amputee with a prosthetic limb for the wrong side.

i dont know if any of you have done this but try it. add up everything you earn and spend and tally up the tax you have to give them, you will be shocked.

I do this every year, and I am always shocked.

This year, my federal taxes, state taxes, property taxes, car taxes, and gasoline taxes came to just 16.7% of what I earn. The only other major taxes I pay are the ones airfare (never could figure out those maths), and the ones attached to rooms and meals when I eat at a restaurant (9%).

In return for that 16.7%, I have a nice new airport to use. I have highways in good repair to get me there, and in fact they are undertaking a major expansion of route 93 and building a new access road to the airport. Last night the wife and I had dinner at a restaurant, and I never once worried about whether the kitchen was clean (my taxes pay to inspect them), or whether the food was safe (my taxes pay to have them tested), or whether the water was toxic (my taxes pay to have it tested and purified). When my mom had a spell a couple years ago, there were two qualified EMTs and an ambulance there within minutes, to ready take her to a hospital 20 minutes away.

Oh, but I did pay a $12 parking fine back in November. (I thought parking charges stopped at 6 PM, but when I returned I had a ticket. It was then I noticed I was parked right under a sign that informed me of the new 8 PM cutoff.) It was silly of me not to check the meter, but since I knew I had broken a statute I just paid it. I really didn't consider taking a day off work and going to court to fight it - heck it was a nice day, I had just seen a great concert (Alejandro Escovedo), and since that's the only ticket or fine I have paid in about eight years, I didn't feel like obsessing over it.

So all in all, I really have very little to complain about. My taxes are low, and what I get in return for paying them is, frankly, amazing. Sure, there are things I'd like to change, and with 600 million people living in this country I'm pretty sure not every decision is going to be popular with everyone. But that's just life in a civil society, isn't it?

No, you're paying too much in taxes. The short version is that too many essential services were cut between 2001 and 2008, taxes were cut and reduced receipts below expenditures, and too much money is being spent to service interest payments. I want a better deal for my tax money and demand and expect a 50% across the board Pentagon budget cut, and a 100% withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. The biggest waste and theft of the public treasury is through the Pentagon.

similar in the UK, we waste our tax payers money on foreigners that don't live here (the war in Afganistan) and the foreigners that live here illegally.

rtm,

you have a point, but i think its going to get worse once turkey joins the eu. our government just dont seem to give a shit as they are living it up and dont have to live with the immigrants. we have no borders now and this is one of the reasons they didnt allow us to vote on joining the EU. anyone who leaves afgahastan or where ever are meant to stop at the first country that is deemed safe and live there, how they get into britain is a mystery. im not racist or anything, but we really have to be careful.

every single person should withold their tax money in protest, this is the only way to hurt the bankers who run the show. im planning on witholding mine in the near future, im also wanting to close all my bank accounts down but when you go to do it, you realise how these bastards have got us screwed. if people aint going to do anything now, the kids 20 years from now will be shaking their heads in disgust at what we have left them.

I'd guess planes and ships mostly. Or the train that runs to France.

andy,

smart git

if that was just the case though, you'd think they would be easy to find and how can they afford to travel by plane or boat. was reading that the british government have just sold the white cliffs of dover, or the port of dover to the french. i cant believe we are letting them away with this. i would also like to see the channel tunnel closed, because that was built for one reason. and that reason was so they could enter britain, of course the governrment wont ever admit this, they will tell us something differenet and most believe them.

genesis, "selling england by the pound" is making more sense everyday.

anyone up for a revolution?

i've always predicted a revolution or civil war as a direct result of immigration but i've decided that the indiginous are too lazy to bother.

the immigration problem has gone beyond the point of no return, this island has lost it's identity completely, if you don't agree with me, you might have to wait a few more years to be convinced because you clearly don't live in an area overrun by the bastards.

The building industry in South East London (and maybe everywhere else) is heavily reliant on East European (mostly Polish) workers. Why? Becuase they are highly skilled, work hard and don't take a tea break every twenty minutes or so. My experience of British builders has been pretty grim. Same with pubs. Primarily Polish staff. It's the usual thing. People come in and do the jobs the Brits don't want/won't do/can't do. Then the recession bites and its the fault of the immigrants. I can't get my head round that at all.

In any event, as EU members these people have as much right to be in the UK as you or I do.

rtm,

i do agree with you as i know its worse in england than scotland.

mac,

your right also, they have as much right here now because of the eu, but is this really true? after all it didnt get the consent of the british people, so therefore has no power unless were remain silent. i dont agree the poles work better/harder than us though, everyone i know works their butts off. they work hard but no better than us.

we cant afford to do a lot of the jobs they do as we are all in debt, but i know some women who have 3 jobs and no social life at all, all because of debt. some might want to argue its their own fault for getting into debt but i would beg to differ, but begging aint my business.

remember one importent thing folks, the gain power through silence.

Again, I think you are mis-reading the story. The british government is considering privatization offers for the Port of Dover, and a french firm has expressed interest. Nothing has been sold yet, and the "white cliffs of dover" are not part of the deal.

Nothing new there in UK privatisation. German, French, Dutch, Danish & US companies have all bought into the UK railways. What used to be British Airports Authority belongs to Ferrovial, a Spanish company.
