Can't beat Vincent Price. I like Omega Man too though. I am legend didn't impress me too much at all. Typical action flick.

Went to the cinema last night for the Halloween double bill. The Plaza in Stockport is a retro art deco building which has recently been renovated but really retains the old-time feel. An organist rises out from the pit and plays before the show and during the interval and they still finish with the national anthem.

First on was Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the b/w Fredric March one from the early 30s. This was the latest technology at the time, with innovative camerawork, split screens, voice overs, and transformation scenes, but now seems sadly dated. The horror effects are quite humorous and some of the scenes funny rather than scary. Not really the film's fault but the audience enjoyed it and there was lots of laughing, especially at Hyde's teeth and manic grin.

Second was the classic Cushing/Lee Dracula, which still holds its own reasonably well despite lopping huge parts out of Stoker's story. If you like the old horror films but have only seen them on TV I'd advise a visit if a local cinema shows them. Much better atmosphere, and even where the effects are dated it's still good to see how they would have appeared to a less technically sophisticated audience 50 or 80 years ago.

Just seen a couple of the Tales Of The Unexpected series recorded from TV last night. Now that is corny (and not as old as the Jekyll & Hyde film)

Whilst waiting for new tires ( tyres ) I was killing time in Target and there was a dvd set of 50 sci fi movies for $10. Most were forgettable but I do recall that they included The Last Man on Earth, Metropolis, and Nosforatu plus at least 1 or 2 others that were quite good

S. You didn't like Klaus Kinski's remake? Or "shadow of the vampire" with William Dafoe? You're getting picky in your old age! :D

I saw "stone of destiny" on the tube today. Interesting because it's based on a true story. England had the (originally) scottish stone of destiny in Wesminster Abby, and it rested under the coronation throne there. Without spoiling the story, I can say the stone is now on "loan" to Scotland untill the next coronation.

Not seen Kinski's remake or Shadow of the Vampire. Is Shadow of the Vampire the one based on Max Schreck being a real vampire? And is it worth having?

Not so much what I have been watching, but what our American message board friends can watch over this weekend.

National Geographic Wild channel are having a penguins marathon this weekend on Saturday and Sunday - including showing several episodes of the 'Penguin Island' TV series which was filmed over several years where I work - the Phillip Island Nature Park. Check out the smallest penguins in the world (12 to 13 inches tall) and the work that goes into protecting them.

About three to five minutes into the first episode, when one of my female colleagues is talking to the crowd on a microphone, if you freeze frame it you will see a small, very blurry and brief image of a tall, dark haired ranger standing on the beach in front of the other stand which is me :) :) See the link below for viewing details.
