 Re: Recent Gigs
I wouldn't say that. They also covered some West Coast psychedelic bands as well Justin .

 Re: Recent Gigs
Disappointed with the Jonathan Richman show at Bush Hall,London last night. Not because it wasn't good, but because it wasn't long enough! He only did an hour, including the encore.................Still we found a good eating place beforehand, just over the road, and afterwards we had plenty of time to get to Ziggy's local for a couple before time was called

 Re: Recent Gigs
Last Nick Lowe - Geraint Watkins - Huntingdon Hall Worcester Friday 02/03/2012
Great venue - great gig - a lot of new - a bit of 'old' - kept the die hard fans and the ones that just remember the hit[s] from years ago happy.
Nicks always been a country rock / rockabilly groover - and is never affraid to mess about with arrangement - even when it comes to the hit[s] - in this case 'Peace Love and Understanding' became a slow tempo almost acoustic number - and whilst I love the full on drive behind previous arrangements - the 'less is more' argument comes to the fore - or maybe I'm just getting old?
Long standing [sitting] band member Geraint Watkins provided support from behind his piano / keyboard - and was a revelation - I'd seen him before during Nick's set take over for a number - but as a support I initially couldn't get a handle on him - by the end of his set I, like the rest of the crowd, had taken his style an approach to heart - quotes like 'I'm just here to make you happy' - 'record for sale' [who says record nowadays - apart from me?] was quickly followed up by 'dont need the money - if you dont want to you dont have to' - class act.

Don't worry JC and Willie - I wont be having my picture taken with her!!

....yes .....also Roadrunner (Once) and also Roadrunner (Twice) Why bother to write new songs when the one you have is what people want to hear G

He also pops up in Slim Chance, who are usually a good night out, with the spirit of Ronnie Lane in approximate presence

 Re: Recent Gigs
Nick Lowe is playing in Melbourne in just over two weeks time (two nights at The Forum - a great venue). He is in the country for this year's Byron Bay Bluesfest over Easter. I have been thinking about going to see him, having never seen him live. He was out here about two years ago touring with Ry Cooder which I missed unfortunately. Not that I don't trust Cludgie's judgement but has any other MB'ers seen Mr. Lowe in recent times. I would be interested in your feedback.

 Re: Recent Gigs
Tom, I've seen Nick Lowe recently / three times in as many years... highly recommended... as long as you know what to expect going in. Nick is a "mature" singer / songwriter these days... so if you're hoping to see the Jesus Of Cool / bass playing pub rocker in the Riddler suit, singing about 'The Sound Of Breaking Glass', you'll be sorely disappointed. However, if you're familiar at all with his late 90s / early 2000s output (the 'Brentford Trilogy' of albums), then you'll have an idea of what to expect... laid back, somewhat alt-country, acoustic guitar-driven, introspective songs about being a middle-aged white guy. I know you're a fan of Paul Kelly and I'd say Nick isn't a long way away from that style of songwriting... very similar approach to the latter half of their careers. The shows I saw were all solo / one-man-and-his-guitar affairs... with some support from the above mentioned Geraint Watkins as well as Ron Sexsmith. I've yet to see him with a full band... which would be great. I gather that this current tour is with a band... so well worth checking out. In fact, I've just seen that he's playing First Avenue in Minneapolis in April... I may have to look in to that one. Here's some typical current Nick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7txCdLCP9U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNeg_pkm ... re=related

 Re: Recent Gigs
Nick Lowe introduced me to Ron a few years back - for which I am eternally grateful - although I have seen Nick Lowe several times over the years I have few of his records - however in the last year I have bought almost all of Ron's back catalogue! Update: to set the record straight I will order The Brentford Trilogy

 Re: Recent Gigs
Closest show to me is 5 hours away. I doubt I'll go since I've never driven more than 45 minutes to a show. I would however like to see Nick Lowe again, it has been 30 years.

 Re: Recent Gigs
War on Drugs at The Thekla in Bristol last Thursday, absolutely awesome. If you have heard the albums you have not been prepared for the guitar mayhem of the live experience. You will have to wait for the next GB tour now as that was the last date of the tour.

 Re: Recent Gigs
I nearly went to see Nick Lowe at Huntingdon Hall but waited another day and saw him last night at Birmingham Town Hall. I love his music and would recommend him to anyone. He is always better with a band, which he is on this tour. I agree with Hookway's comments. You have to forget his 70's style as he is much changed. However he is class and well worth seeing. He did a fantastic acoustic version of Costello's 'Alison' for the second encore. I would also agree with other comments about Geraint Watkins. A very deprecating man with a unique style. It does seema shame with so much rubbish around nowadays that an artist like Lowe can't sell out a relatively small venue like the Town Hall. Ian
