Issue #82, Part 2 - Jan 2008

Kellianne Flynn: Congratulations!!!

John N: I don't know about this. I used to use barometers but I don't anymore. I just want to do better, that's all. The hardest person for anybody to beat is themselves.

Mark Jacobs: Christine and I get on fine!! As you probably know by now, we both popped down to Redbank to take part in Glen Burtnik's charity Christmas show and a great time was had by all. Debbie was as gracious as ever. Two lovely ladies! So - you got something for Christmas!

Peter Jordan: 'Why are you doing acoustic stuff?' Sometimes the lyrics can get lost with a full band and that's part of what I do. Also, full band is kind of obligated to play mostly faster songs. Acoustically, you can insert more slow songs. It's not so hard on the voice - and it's a different circuit. I was asked to do it and I said OK, so it must be right - or I'd have said no. Is it because I'm older? NO! It's just because it's another way to play to an audience. We'll see.

David Kiley thought the Troc show the best he'd seen in a long time - despite getting lost ordering the wrong tickets online and running out of gas on the way home! (not much fun on that particular stormy night.) It was hardly the Nor'easter they'd forecast though. Coulda been worse.

Dave Drew: 'Brooklyn, superb. You were playing a Rainsong early in the show, but then you switched to what looked like a Martin. I'm looking for a new acoustic - what's your opinion?' Rainsongs are percussive, Martin's are elegant and Gibsons are great. It's what suits you. Go to the shop and play them all. The one that sounds and feels the best to you is the one to get. Everybody's different. Dave bought four 'Shrunken Heads' for Christmas presents so here's the bar he runs - Bartini Bar in Babylon, Long Island, New York. Says he'll send me a limo should the occasion ever arise. You never know.

John Sutton: 'Cover Libby Roderick's 'How Could Anyone Tell.' Never heard of it! Good title.

Paul: 'Come to Charlottesville, Virginia!

Staale Einarsen: 'Did you know you were on Norwegian TV last Friday? Prime Channel; prime time - the 'Strings Attached' Concert in Oslo. Any chance of an acoustic set in Norway?' Let's see how it goes. I'm still a novice!

Valery Shampoo: 1. Probably the word would be 'intuitive', but 'daft' also comes to mind! 2. I don't know. It's probably what I'm for. 3. Even on a low day you learn something that will come in handy on a good day. And you won't remember the low day. 4. I've made stuff up, but it's not as much fun.

Blue Claw: 'Great show at the Troc - what's the second verse in 'I'm Getting Nuttin' for Christmas?' I forgot.

Moe Armstrong: Formerly of Daddylonglegs now living in CT. Love part of the world, Moe. Enjoy.

Ray Lapthorn - waiting for Dartford.

Jerry Brindinski: 'Great show in Philly. Troc is a great little venue - rich sound - loved the Christmas ditty. Looked like you were having fun with that one. Lots of ex-pats in the crowd - Sunderland, Spurs and Arsenal fans I see at the local from time to time.' Enjoyable gig.

Ken Oudinot: Ken, I don't have that good a memory, but I'm glad it turned out good for you.

Alan Maddox: 'Thanks for SH and the autumn tour (Oxford was superb). Looking forward to February.'

Keith Nickless: Same to you.

David J. Piwonski: Loved that band from early on but then they split - the other guy formed World Party. Original band great. Karl Wallinger - great songwriter.

Tim: There's been a lot of covers and a fair few I haven't even heard but what I have heard, I've really liked.

Pamela Collins: Don't listen to him; he'll lead you astray!!

Jeffrey: No, I'm not going to write another 'Irene Wilde'. You do it.

Eric Hemphill: Picked up, 'Mott the Hoople Under Review' - a documentary critique! Actually, it was rather good if I'm remembering the right one. 'After seeing you in the few clips provided, I remember yet again why I used to wear my Mum's sunglasses and stand in front of the mirror pretending to be you.' Eric was the youngest Hot Mott (and the only chap).

Olof: This was the track before I had the final lyric and before Queen stopped by.

Harvey Brooks (one of the finest bass players to grace this world). I'll have a look Harvey. Good to be back in touch.

Victor: 'SH fantastic and the two shows I saw were brilliant - what more can I add.' That's quite enough, Victor. Thank you.

Joe Crnobrna: Tell her you told me and tell her to hang tough and that I'll be thinking about her. It's life and life only.

Jenx: 'Do you stay in contact with Darrell Bath and would you work with him again?' He is the 'Artful Dodger'. I'm not in contact, but I could get in touch if need be. Who knows if we'll play together again - circumstances - it's all circumstances.

MT: No, your brother was a positive asset, as always. Just need a little guidance now and again! I don't think either of you ruin anything. Quite the reverse.

Wes: 'Came to Brooklyn from Boston - GREAT show - especially 'Nuttin' for Christmas'! Voice awesome.' Yes, Lisa was playing that night.

Al Johnson: 'I went to a Roy Wood gig last week - always was and still is a class act. Did your paths cross in the 70's?' Don't think so.

Martin Averweg: Do I plan gigs in Germany or Switzerland in 2008. Not at the moment.

Jeff and Pam: Look, I know it's all lovely - but enough already!!!

Mike Riley: 'It was fun to see Mott show up in the Juno movie. We've had a lot of fun talking about the scene. We live in Minnesota where the movie is set. I saw the writer of the screenplay on TV. She must be a fan of yours.' Good - oh.

Brian Calingaert: Says Mott comes up in the dialog in Juno. Have I seen it yet? No, not yet - somebody says 'Dudes' is in another moving with Ben Kingsley as well. S'all happening at the movies! Re: Paul Hyde - 'I hope their first three albums come out on DC some day. Very solid albums. Hard to believe they haven't seen the light of day.'

Shawn Jones is waiting for the next one - same here.

Doug Smith: 'Ever thought of going to Nashville?' Not really. 'Any chance of Australia' I can never say never. 'Considered a covers album?' Not really.

Recalculating Bob is going to Plymouth with a party of 12! Says he wants me to do 'Scars'. Discovered Wilco (through moi) 'which I rate highly. With the Deluxe copy I got this bonus DVD which features the band performing some of the tracks live.' Good idea!

Steve Horne: Quality control has a lot to do with it, but obviously, I listen to everything the band say - and they're not shy!

Jim M: 'Glad to see you getting 'UNCUT' press, but is 'How Do You Sleep' really your favourite John Lennon track?' Of course not - it had already gone. 'What's wrong with silly love songs?' Nothing at all mate, nothing at all.

S.B. loves the video/DVD of 'World'. (I know it was.)

Tony Adams: 'It's been a while since the folks in the South Eastern portion of the States have seen you. Any chance of Kentucky (or close) this year? I picked 'SH' along with 'Magic' as album of the year in our NPR poll.' We'll try.

Stephen: Happy with Philly, but traffic delays cancelled Brooklyn. I'm now being booked by High Road Touring of Sausalito (415) 332-9292

Paul W: I think that particular track was recorded a semi-tone down. The verse is F --.G //4 times over - the chorus is C - A min - F - G - C. Simple!

Peter Jordan: 'To what extent, if at all, do you adapt your writing to reach your audience?' I just do what comes next. 'Would you advise anyone writing creatively to write for themselves in the first instance?' Well, it is your personality in the final analysis that people will either connect with. It all depends what you want out of life. Everybody's influenced early in life, but it's good to get them out of the way as soon as you can. If you're motivated by ego - or money - there's obviously attention to be paid to your market. If you just like writing then I guess you hope for the best. There's different fields of writing . It's up to the individual and what he or she wants.

Peter Mills needs help in finding SH in Melbourne, Australia.

Andy Sheehan: Dartmouth's south of Milton Keynes as is Plymouth.

Edward Shirley: 'What do you look like on the street?' About the same only older! Sure - sometimes a hat. I've got some good ones.

So that's it then. Thanks for all the greetings you've sent myself and Trudi, Steve, Tracie and Jess. It's much appreciated. So Happy New Year! And awf we go again.
